Trey Lewis fills a huge void in a variety of ways; senior leadership, scoring, and accurate shooting.  However, Coach P and staff aren’t finished rounding out their roster for the 2015-16 season.  Currently, there are two names out there generating the most buzz, Drexel graduate transfer Damion Lee and 4-star SF Maverick Rowan.  However, there are now two new names the UofL coaches are taking a look at.  4-star G Kenny Williams and graduate transfer Sterling Smith from Coppin State.  Williams, who signed with VCU in the fall, received his release this week after Coach Smart left for Texas.  Last week, news came out that the Rowan family is looking at the possibility of Maverick re-classifying to the 2015 class.  If that happens, Mike Hughes of insidetheville.com told us on last week’s LSL radio show that he would likely be Louisville-bound.

Here’s a little more info on the prospects….

Damion Lee is a 6’6 – 200 lb. guard who – like Lewis – can score the ball.  He averaged 21 points per game along with 6 rebounds.  He shoots 44% from the field, 39% from 3, and 89% from the foul line.  He averaged 16.5 ppg and 5 rebounds versus Power-5 competition this past season.  His complete stats are HERE. Lee is scheduled to visit campus early next week.

Maverick Rowan is a 6’7 – 200 lb. athlete who can play the 2 or 3.  He comes from a winning program, as he helped lead Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale, FL to a state championship.  247Sports rates him as a 4-star, 36th nationally overall, and the 7th best SF in the 2016 class.  He is now looking at re-classifying and reportedly needs two more core content class credits to do so.   Will it be in the classroom in summer school or on-line?  Who offers those options, etc.?  That must be figured out before anything can happen. The Rowan family continues to look for ways for Maverick to re-classify, but there are obstacles.  However, from this article, it seems as though the decision to re-classify has been made.

Maverick, a 6-foot-7 guard, averaged 26.5 points as a junior as Cardinal Gibbons cruised to a 33-1 record and No. 11 USA Today national ranking.

If dominating the prep ranks was his priority, Rowan never would have left Lincoln Park. With 2,382 career points, he was on pace to break Tom Pipkins’ WPIAL scoring record (2,838).

If Rowan has one eye on college, the other is on the NBA. He turns 19 on July 14 — which would allow him to be eligible in Pennsylvania and Florida — and wants a new challenge.

“We’re trying to see if it’s possible for him to get to college next year, but there’s a lot of obstacles,” Ron Rowan said. “It’s not as easy as it sounds.”

Ron Rowan said Maverick needs to pass an English and American government class to meet NCAA requirements but has to pass half-credits in composition and theology to receive a diploma from Cardinal Gibbons.

That has Maverick looking for a school that offers the summer classes he needs to graduate. This way, he can continue an odyssey that has always been about basketball not high school.

Sterling Smith is a 6’4 guard who played at Coppin State and is slated to visit UofL next Wednesday.  You can view his stats HERE.

Named to the All-MEAC second team, Smith averaged a team-high 13.9 points as a junior. He was second on the team in rebounding (4.9) and among the conference leaders in field-goal percentage (46.8 percent) and three-point shooting (41.8). Smith led Coppin State with 76 threes. A solid defender, Smith was seventh in the league in steals last season. He scored in double figures 23 times and scored 20 or more points seven times. Smith is also reportedly considering Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.

Kenny Williams is a 6’2 – 165 lb. SG, who’s rated as a 4-star prospect and 88th overall according to the 247Sports Composite.  UofL has a foot in the door because of assistant coach Kenny Johnson, who’s friends with Williams’ AAU coach.  Michigan and UNC have reached out as well.

What about Mychal Mulder?  The 4-star JUCO guard looks to be towards the bottom of the list currently.  He visited a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t receive an offer.  Based on his comments after that visit, it appears that the staff told him to be on stand by after some more roster moves were made.

We have ZERO paint presence—0. All these transfer guards are bike patches, no way you can be excited about this.

Deng will contribute immediately. Look for Mangok to be much better this year. Anas will be a major player next year. Spalding will contribute off the bench.

The month's full-of-the-moon has come back and gone which peculiar malady called March Madness nearly is upon the United States. Choice Sunday and spring's annual huge Dance as simply round the corner, once America's faculty basketball conferences absorb some loose end of their own. Most leagues with postseason tourneys begin competition on Thursday.
