Pitino strikes back
One National Championship – check
5 Final Fours – check
Not gonna sit around and take your shit – check
You knew it was just a matter of time until Louisville head coach Rick Pitino fired back at John Calipari for his asinine and disrespectful comments at the annual inbred camp out / sleepover in Lexington this past weekend. In a conversation with CBS Sports yesterday, Pitino lobbed a direct shot at Calipari and made it clear that he’s not backing down any time soon.
“Four things I’ve learned in my 59 years about people,” Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. “I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid.”
“If the shoe fits anyone,” he added. “Wear it.”
It’s no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.
Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.
Calipari is brash — and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he’ll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.
But that is ancient history now.
Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn’t care what he says or who he offends these days.
Something tells me that this year’s meeting will be the most heated yet between the two sides. The last time the two teams met in Lexington there were multiple technicals, tons of trash talk and some near rumbles. I expect both teams to be in the top ten when they face off, and the intensity level will be at an all time high.
