Coach Bedford and Coach Watson both spoke for over 30 minutes each on Media Day and offered up some good insight into fall camp and the upcoming season.
*Lorenzo Mauldin continues to impress; he doesn’t know what ‘slow down’ means.
*DeAngelo Brown and Jamaine Brooks are still hurt, but are ahead of schedule and will play this season.
*Preston Brown has emerged as a leader both with his play and vocally.
*Jermaine Reve is one of the best tacklers on the team, that’s why his playing time has increased.
*Charles Gaines, back from a long suspension, is backing up Reve. In practice, he has made plays on the ball, grabbing a few interceptions.
*Terrell Floyd, who led the team last year in picks with 3 has been the example for the rest of the secondary to get more interceptions/turnovers.
*Hakeem Smith is one of the most talented secondary players in the nation, but he needs to make plays on the the ball when it’s in the air.
*Fundamentals – especially tackling – will be a focal point in each practice.
*Overall, the defense will attack on every down, blitzing much more.
*All QBs get a lot of reps in practice, not just Teddy.
*Will Gardner will be the back-up QB; Freshman Kyle Bolin and JUCO transfer Brent Nelson will battle it out for third string.
*Bolin is “in China” when it comes to the new football playbook and language, but it’s something the staff is confident he will pick up soon.
*Michaelee Harris is first in line to replace Andrell Smith as a slot and 3rd down receiver.
*The O-Line is set with Jake Smith, Kam Joyer, Jamon Brown, and John Miller. Ryan Mack and Nacho Garcia are battling it out for the last starting spot.
*Dyer looks the part and the staff will know more in the coming weeks.
*Dominique Brown is 100% healthy and will be a major part of the offense.
*Senorise Perry is a freak and has made an Adrian Peterson -like recovery from his torn ACL.
*James Quick has been impressive early, especially with his knowledge of the game and his speed.
