Q and A with “Russdiculous” Russ Smith

Posted on Oct 22 2012 - 10:36am by Ethan Moore

Before the media swoon took over, LSL got a chance to ask Russ Smith a variety of questions, ranging  from basketball to horse racing to roommate hi-jinx.

LSL: “What was going through your mind when you were at the free throw line against Florida, with the one-and-one and the potential to ice the game?”

Russ: “I like situations like that. I feel like I’m a good guy under pressure.  I don’t really think about much when I’m playing, but at that time I was thinking ‘Final Four, can’t blow this, I gotta make em’.”

LSL: “Your thoughts on the horse Russdiculous finishing second in his maiden race.”

Russ: “I was happy, I was like ‘wow’.  He ran a good race, plus it’s me.”

LSL: “You guys are ranked #2 in the preseason Coaches Poll, and have a lot of expectations this year.  What is different at this time now, compared to last season?”

Russ:  “We lost Chris and Kyle, so losing Senior leadership is always hard.  We are healthy to start the year off and we are just a lot more experienced.  As of right now, we don’t look at 1,2, or 3.  We don’t look at any of those rankings.  As long as we take care of business in January and February, it will hopefully set us up for a run in March.”

LSL: “Overall, how is the health of the team?”

Russ: “The health of the team is good, knock on wood. We have little things like a bruised leg or a knee to the thigh.”

LSL: “What is one game you are looking forward to playing in the most?”

Russ: “The Big East Championship and the National Championship, that’s our goal.  Those are the games we look forward to.  We know we have to be ready to face any opponent in those games, and you can’t get there by underachieving. We know how tough it is to get there and hopefully we’ll get there.”

LSL: What is the funniest story you can share about about Gorgui and you rooming together during the tournament run?”

Russ: “Wow, oh man.  I think we got to Phoenix real late, I don’t remember what time it was, but it was real late. When we got to our room, Gorgui was hungry.  He ordered room service at like four or five in the morning.  Gorgui is playing his African music and it is so early in the morning, and I’m like ‘I just want to get in the room and take a shower.’  That’s a funny Gorgui story.”
