Two of the biggest weaknesses UofL basketball has are its lack of perimeter shooting and scoring presence at the 5.  There’s simply no denying it. However, over the last couple of weeks, Coach P has been eying a guard in Florida by the name of Ryan McMahon who could potentially help cure some shooting woes.  The 6’1 prospect isn’t highly rated – although ESPN now has him as a 4-star  – but he does possess a deadly shot from 3.

He averages nearly 30 points per game for Sarasota’s Cardinal Mooney (22-3) and has a 39-inch vertical leap.  Recently, he put up 27 points against Antonio Blakeney’s team.  Pitino has watched him play once and he officially visited UofL for last weekend’s North Carolina game.  The staff made another trip down to Florida last night to further evaluate him as his stock is on the rise.  His profile doesn’t scream high-major, but it seems as though Pitino and staff are intrigued and offered him last night.  As you would expect, it didn’t take him long to commit.  One thing is for certain though, he’s like most of the freshmen in this year’s class – much too thin.  He’s going to have to get a lot stronger and add some muscle mass if he wants to see the court.

It also follows players who impress Dick Vitale. The famed college basketball guru and Lakewood Ranch resident took to Twitter on Dec. 29 after watching McMahon, who shoots better than 63 percent from inside the 3-point line, play during the Suncoast Holiday Classic at Riverview and called him a “gem that can shoot the rock.”

On Jan. 8, his tweet directed at ESPN recruiting analysts Paul Biancardi and Reggie Rankin boasted that McMahon can play collegiately at the Division I level and “his stroke is fantastic.”

Oh, there’s more.

Fast forward to Jan. 26, when Vitale told Biancardi and the rest of Vitale’s 684,000 followers that McMahon is a “winner” and a “gym rat.”

“Coaches,” Vitale tweeted, “get to Cardinal Mooney.”

At least one was listening: Louisville coach Rick Pitino visited Cardinal Mooney during Friday’s game against North Port, and McMahon visited Louisville the following day.

Davidson, Ohio and Tulsa have also reached out to McMahon, ranked 18th in the state and a four-star recruit by ESPN, since Vitale’s tweets.

Anyway, take a look at his highlight films and judge for yourself.
