Louisville hoops signee Donovan Mitchell has been a busy man the past seven days.
First, last Wednesday, the 5-star guard helped lead Brewster Academy to their second consecutive national championship while averaging 14 points per game in the tournament. Then this past Monday, he was officially named to the Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic roster, where he will join future teammates Deng Adel, Ray Spalding, and Ryan McMahon. Finally, it was announced Tuesday he would be participating in the Jordan Brand Classic regional game to he held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on April 17th (the week following the Derby Classic).
While not held in the same prestige as the Jordan Brand main event, the regional game is not without talent. He will be joined by Brewster teammate and Connecticut signee Jalen Adams along with eight other players signed to play for an ACC program.
There have been some fine players to come out of past regional games, too, including a particular power forward by the name of Montrezl Harrell. He participated in the 2012 game, where he finished with 14 points, including multiple highlight reel dunks, and was named the game’s MVP. If anyone has any trouble recalling that game or would like to see a babyfaced Trezl dominate the competition, here is video proof for your enjoyment.
Perhaps Mitchell will take it upon himself to have an MVP performance of his own and become the second future Card in the past three seasons to win the award.
He was no doubt snubbed for the main game as well as the McDonald’s All-American game, as he was more than qualified to play in each, but luckily for him, he will still be able to showcase his talents against the top talent in the class. Both the Jordan Brand regional game and Derby Classic are stacked with 4- and 5-star prospects who are projected to be major players at the next level.
