With no more available scholarships open for the 2012-2013 season, it’s been long speculated that Terry Rozier would be the lone commitment for the Louisville Cardinals. However, over the last two days there’s been rumblings about some mutual interest between a potential new name and UofL. Virginia Tech signee Montrezl Harrell has asked to be released from his letter-of-intent after the school fired head coach Seth Greenberg on Monday. In other similar situations, more often than not the player is granted their release and they become late free agents on the open market. The connection between Harrell and the Cardinals is simple: Kevin Keatts. The Louisville assistant not only recruited Harrell to Hargrave Military Institute but was his head coach two years ago and has a strong relationship with the 6-7, bruising power forward. Early speculation has Harrell also considering Kentucky, Maryland and a few others. There’s playing time available here, particularly as a back-up to Chane Behanan. The only obvious question still looming is the scholarship crunch. While these things always have a way of working themselves out, someone would have to be moved to a walk-on for a year (maybe Rakeem Buckles???). Harrell is currently ranked #72 overall by Scout.com.
We’ll keep an eye on this thing as it moves along, but right now it’s anyone’s guess how it all works out. Here’s a youtube clip of Harrell in action:
