Inside the Numbers: Pitino’s Impact on Louisville Basketball

The end of the season marked Coach Pitino’s 16th year at the school, and if you look at the overall body of work, you’ll see impressive results.  At Louisville, Pitino is 416-143 (.744) with a 28-12 (.700) mark in the NCAA Tournament highlighted by a national championship, three Final Fours, three Elite Eight appearances, and one Sweet 16.  That comes to an average record per year of 26-9.  

This season culminated 103 years of Louisville basketball.  During that span the Cards have amassed 1,803 victories.  In NCAA Tournament play, UofL has 76 wins.  Here’s a look at the percentage of victories and other milestones Coach Pitino is responsible for since he’s been at Louisville….

*In 16 years, Pitino has accounted for 23% of the program’s wins; 416 out of 1,803

*Pitino has won one of Louisville’s three NCAA Championships or 33%

*Pitino has won six of Louisville’s 19 conference tournament titles or 32% (2003, 2005 in C-USA; 2009, 2012, 2013 in Big East; 2014 in AAC)

*Pitino has 28 of UofL’s 76 NCAA Tournament wins or 37%

*Pitino has made seven of Louisville’s 21 Sweet 16 appearances or 33% (2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)

*He’s accounted for six of Louisville’s 14 Elite Eight appearances or 43% (2005, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015)

*He has three of Louisville’s 10 Final Four appearances or 30% (2005, 2012, 2013)

*Coach Pitino has been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times out of UofL’s 42 appearances or 29% (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017)

*He has 2 out of three of Louisville’s no. 1 seed seasons or 67% (2009, 2013)

*He has 5 of Louisville’s eight 30-win seasons or 63% (2005, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014).

    You can add that U of L was awarded a number ranking in the regular season for the first time ever under Pitino.

      Excellent write-up! Amazing that his first 13 years at UofL exactly matches Joe B. Hall's 13 seasons at UK. Same number of Final Fours, Elite Eights, Sweet Sixteens, NITs, etc. It's not a bad thing. Just an observation.
