Here are a sampling of some news stories to get you up to speed with the football squad as they continue to prepare for the spring game next Friday….
*Coach Grantham is analyzing each position on his defense.
This spring has allowed for good competition between Josh Harvey-Clemons, Chucky Williams and Zykesis Cannon.
“It’s tough because you are starting over again,” Grantham said. “We grade every practice on your production. At the end of the day, it’s about making plays. We are grading every position each day to let them see where they are after each practice.”
Despite the holes in the secondary, Grantham knows what he has upfront with guys like Sheldon Rankins. The all-conference performer a year ago, led the Cardinals in sacks with eight and tackles for loss with 13.0, but Grantham has a ton of respect for his work ethic.
“We have a lot of respect for what Sheldon Rankins has done,” Grantrham said. “He is one of the leaders on defense. He comes to work every day. He is a guy who works to try to perfect his craft every day, and that’s how you become a difference maker.”
*Coach McGee talks QB battle as well as other competitions going on.
“The theory is to apply as much pressure on them as you can to perform on a daily basis,” McGee said. “We want them to be able to perform in the meeting room; to perform on the practice field, so when the pressure shows up in the game, they are comfortable in that environment.”
McGee added, “There’s a lot that comes at them. We run a complex offense, and we expect a lot out of our quarterbacks. They have a lot of control of the offense, and to do that, you have to be in the playbook. You have to study and have confidence to make the checks, and go make the plays behind the checks.”
The Cardinals were back on the field after a big scrimmage on Saturday. McGee thought there was progress made on the field, especially after the first scrimmage two weeks ago.
