Big East Commish Quits

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto resigned today amid pressure from the league’s Presidents.  This move is the latest in which the Big East acted a step slow.  He failed to build on the momentum of adding TCU in November of 2010.  Instead, he sat on his hands and repeatedly spit out statements like, “the league is closely monitoring the landscape and will look to expand if there is a school to add value.”  However, schools like UCF, Memphis, SMU, and Temple didn’t “add value” until Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU left for other conferences.  The Big East will now look to broker a much better TV deal in September, and since the Big East Presidents didn’t have enough confidence in him to that, the league is looking for someone who can.  It’s really pretty simple; you can’t lose league pillars like Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU in addition to a football power like TCU and replace them with C-USA 2.0 and expect to keep your job in a BCS league.  Here are some interesting snippets from CBSSports.com ad ESPN.com’s articles:

-“In addition, Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was a close confident of Marinatto and his pending departure has pushed the Cardinals to further consider the Big 12 if they can get an invitation from the current 10-team league, a source said.”

-“A source said Marinatto’s exit had been building for weeks. The source said the basketball members in the Big East were upset that they had no say in the expansion process.”

-“Marinatto also wanted to accept a TV deal a year ago but was shot down by a 12-4 vote with Georgetown leading the charge not to accept.”

-“Sources told CBSSports.com potential candidates for the next Big East commissioner include current Big East associate commissioners Nick Carparelli and Tom Odjakjian, SEC executive associate commissioner Mark Womack, Pac-12 deputy commissioner Kevin Weiberg, Greg Shaheen, former NCAA executive vice president for championships; Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti and Kit Morris, director of college sports at Nike.”
