The small forward position for UofL has recently been more of a swing-man or bigger shooting guard. Take for instance Chris Smith and Kyle Kuric. Both played significant minutes at the 3 last year even though they were 6’2″ and 6’4″ respectively. For the 2012-2013 season, the Cards will be fortunate to have a variety of players that can fill this position. The most likely starter at small forward this year will either be Wayne Blackshear or Luke Hancock, both of which are in the 6’5″- 6’6″ range. Also able to play that position are Kevin Ware (6’4″) and Angel Nunez (6’7″). Therefore the outlook is very good for small forward at UofL. With limited need for another small forward Pitino has really only targeted one, Troy Williams.
#1. Troy Williams – 6’6″ 180lbs
A very talented small forward who will be attending Oak Hill Academy this year, Williams is long and athletic who is especially good at attacking the rim and locking down a defender. Rated as the 30th best overall player in the 2013 class by ESPN, Williams recruitment has been a little bit of a roller coaster ride, originally narrowing his school list down to just Kentucky and North Carolina before adding Florida, Louisville, Alabama and Georgetown back in the mix. There has been talk of a package deal with Anthony Barber to go to either Alabama or Louisville but with the recent developments in the Anthony Barber recruitment I would imagine that the chances of landing Williams would have diminished. While it is still possible Louisville would go after him, I would think Coach Pitino likes his returning forwards and does not end up taking a small forward in the 2013 class.
